Nautica South Beach Triathlon Conquers Miami Beach for the Third Year in a Row Celebrities, athletes and locals helped raise over $175,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®
WHO: Over 2,400 determined celebrities, athletes, corporate teams, paratriathletes and professional triathletes, competed side-by-side on the shores of Miami Beach for the 3rd annual Nautica South Beach Triathlon, raising over $175,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Hannah Montana and Fame star Anna Maria Perez de Taglé, kicked off the festivities by singing the National Anthem.
First place winner overall in the Men’s Division was twelve-time Ironman champion Chris “Macca” McCormack (01:15:11), who had a photo-finish against fellow Ironman champion Chris Lieto (01:15:12). Guto Antunes (1:26:57) came in third overall in the Men’s Division. First place overall in the Women’s Division was Laurel Wassner (1:26:10) and close behind was model Jenny Fletcher (1:30:43) and local Miami participant Elise Schillmoller (1:39:56) who ranked second and third overall.
Other competitors included co-anchor and national correspondent for NBC's Today Natalie Morales, who competed in the all-new International Distance Race; actress Eliza Dushku, who stuck alongside boyfriend and former NBA player Rick Fox, throughout the whole race; NBC’s The Biggest Loser winner Ali Vincent, who completed the Classic Distance Race solo this year; The Bold and The Beautiful’s Heather Tom, who placed first in the Female Celebrity Division in the Classic Distance Race; three-time Winter X Games freestyle skiing gold medalist Sarah Burke, who ran in a relay team; and actor Geoff Stults, who competed the swimming leg in a coed relay team.
Other celebrities who came out to support a great cause included NFL Carolina Panther running back DeAngelo Williams, who hosted the awards ceremony as well as led the Kid Run and Tot Trot.
WHAT: At 7:00 a.m., the all-new International Distance Race kicked off with an invigorating 1.5K ocean swim, a 40k bike over Miami Beach’s causeways, and concluded with a 10K run alongside Miami Beach’s famous Art Deco District. At 7:30 a.m. participants in the Classic Distance Race hit the beach for a half-mile ocean swim, 19 mile bike and 4 mile out-and-back run. Both races made their grand finish on the warm and smooth sands of South Beach. Hundreds of spectators came out to support and witness the fierce competition.
